Manawa Hou mai i Tuahiwi ki Moeraki
Ngā Tapuwae o Tiramōrehu
December 3-5th 2017 & January 23-27th
E te whānau whānui o Ngāi tahu huri noa I te motu, tēnā koutou. We’re excited to bring you news of our upcoming hīkoi for Manawa Hou- a kaupapa designed to give Ngāi Tahu an opportunity to explore their Ngāi Tahu identity and takiwā, all while meeting cool people and having lots of fun! These hīkoi are a little different to previous Manawa Hou… this year, we are retracing the steps of Matiaha Tiramōrehu, one of our Ngāi Tahu tīpuna. The first hīkoi starts in Waitaha/Canterbury (December), and the second hīkoi reunites us at Moeraki (January). We’ll explore who Matiaha was, where he came from, and what he was able to achieve in his lifetime. If you are keen to attend both hīkoi, then please check out the information below and make sure we have your application by 5pm on Monday the 30th October. (Spaces are limited so late applications may not be considered)
Mā wai? Who is this for ?
We’re looking for rangatahi who:
- Are a registered member of Ngāi Tahu (we can help you if you’re not yet registered)
- Are 15-18 years of age (or Y11-13 at school)
- Are willing to give everything a go
- Are able to commit to attending both hīkoi (December and January)
Ki hea? Mā hea? Where is it and how do I get there?
The first hīkoi will begin in North Canterbury (near Kaiapoi), Saturday Dec 3rd, 9am. The second hīkoi will begin in Moeraki (near Dunedin), Tuesday Jan 23rd, 12pm. It is likely that there will be vans available for rangatahi who are based in, or able to make their way, to Ōtautahi / Christchurch. Further details regarding itinerary, start points and transport will be sent out in mid-November, via email, to those who are placed on the hīkoi. The on-course costs for this hīkoi are entirely covered by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, travel to Christchurch will be participants/whānau responsibility.
Ka aha tātou? What will we do?
Together we will explore who Matiaha Tiramorehu was, and understand how his thoughts and actions impact us today. These discoveries will happen through:
- Connecting with one another, and as a rōpū
- Wandering the whenua/land and hearing kōrero/stories
- Learning waiata, haka and te reo that relates to Matiaha
- Giving to the communities that host us
Me aha ināianei? What’s next?
