The building will feature a new day time star gazing experience where visitors will explore and learn about the night sky. The Takapō Working Party who are made up of representatives from Arowhenua\, Waihao and Moeraki Rūnanga and Professor Rangi Mātāmua have been supporting Ngāi Tahu Tourism and Earth & Sky to ensure the new experience is grounded in whakaaro and mātauranga Ngāi Tahu. \nWhanau are invited to attend this update which will be held from 11am till 12 followed by lunch. To assist with catering can those whanau who wish to attend let the office know \nwaihao.manager@ngaitahu.iwi.nz \nVenue: Waihao Marae \nDate: July 8th \nPōwhiri: 11am -12 followed by kia \nMatariki wānanga \nOn Tuesday 10 July a wānanga about Māori star lore\, Matariki\, and the new Ngāi Tahu Tourism and Earth & Sky tourist attraction is going to be held for whānau from Arowhenua\, Waihao and Moeraki at Arowhenua Marae. The wānanga will start at 2pm and will conclude with kai at the marae at 5pm. For those that are keen there will be a night time star gazing session and accommodation will be available at the marae for this. Rangi was born and raised in Ruatāhuna and affiliates through his dad to Ngāi Tūhoe. Rangi is an ambassador of the revitalisation of Māori language\, tikanga and culture\, and in particular he is considered one of the country’s leading experts on Māori astronomy. On a recent trip to Bluff\, to work with our Awarua whānau on Māori star lore\, Rangi discovered that his mother has links to the Stirling whānau. Rangi has been a leading voice in trying to ensure that the stories of Matariki and the Māori use of the stars is shared with our whānau. Apologies for the late confirmation\, but\, the Matheson Family has confirmed that they will be able to come to our marae on the 7th of April\, 1pm\, to hand over the toki that they have had\, to us. \nThe format for the day will be: \nThe family and the toki will be called into our where where the toki will be put on a little table set up at the back wall. Would like a couple of taua to sit with the pounamu on our side\, and they will have a couple of their wahine on their side of the table. \nI will do a karakia for the return of the taonga followed by the powhiri. \nThey will respond to the powhiri and then the hongi. \nWe will then just mingle and host the family until hakari. \nThe Matheson family have asked that during the meal\, if some of them could get up and speak to us about the day and what the toki and returning it means to them as a family. \nAt the end of the meal \, I will then do the closing karakia for the day’s event. This will enable the Matheson Family and anyone else who needs to leave\, to leave and those who need to clean up\, to clean up.  \nWe are expecting up to ten of the Matheson Family to arrive for the day. \nCould those who will be attending\, let the marae office know by next Wednesday.
